Changes to Malaysia's Payment Statistics (from July 2022 publication onwards)

Bank Negara Malaysia has made changes to data published on Malaysia’s Payment Statistics, effective July 2022. The changes made are intended to improve relevance of the payment statistics, by adding new data sets which incorporated recent changes within the payment landscape, eliminating redundancy in the existing published data and improving the ease of reference for users.

Salient changes to the published statistics are as follows:

The previous table on Electronic Payments: Volume and Value of Transactions has been segregated and expanded into 3 sections:

(i) Table 2 – Payment Instruments,
(ii) Table 3 – Payment Systems; and
(iii) Table 4 – Payment Channels,
with all relevant indicators reclassified into respective sections.

Table 2 – Payment Instruments

• Table 2.1 – Statistics on Payment Instruments have been expanded to include transaction volume and value of card-not-present for credit card, charge card, debit card, as well as cheques data.
• Table 2.2 – Statistics on Cards and Users have been simplified for credit and charge cards, whereas debit card information has been further broken down into standalone and co-badged debit cards.
• Table 2.3 – Statistics on Outstanding E-Money Liabilities have been added, primarily for e-money issuers to self-monitor their market share in ensuring compliance with relevant policy requirements.

Table 3 – Payment Systems

• Statistics on payment systems have been expanded to include transaction volume and value of new systems, namely JomPay and RPP DuitNow.
• Statistics on FPX and Direct Debit have been segregated to differentiate the transaction volume and value between the two payment systems.

Table 4 - Payment Channels

• Expansion of statistics to include information on number of ATMs, to provide insights on the availability of ATMs within Malaysia.
